scaribhín - a period of rough weather
10.5.2011 We haven't been updating our wildlife log recently as we haven't had much of a chance to get out to sea due to a spell of very windy weather and accompanying rough seas. Every year, from around the middle of April to May 12th, we experience some cold, wet and windy weather, a period we refer to here as the scaribhín. Traditionally, farmers waited for the end of this period before they let their cows out for summer grazing and the fishermen held out until the middle of May before they put out their lobster pots. After all the exciting sightings of basking sharks, minke whales and dolphins we encountered before the weather turned we are hoping now that the scaribhin will end as punctually as it started!
