basking sharks in dingle bay
For the last week or so we've been spotting dozens of basking sharks all around the Blasket Islands. Yesterday on our afternoon eco tour we were literally surrounded by them as were slowly cruising and feeding all around the boat. The fine, settled and warm conditions recently have produced a proliferation in plankton, the basking sharks' food source. In relatively calm conditions south of the Great Blasket Island we were not only able to spot their dorsal and tail fins above the water but also got a glimpse of the white inside of their enormous mouths. We are hoping that they will stay around here for the next couple of months now.
There was also a big feeding frenzy amongst the gannets, diving all around us which bodes well for possible sightings of common dolphins.
